This week I engaged in body scans as my meditative practise. According to Maya Spindel (who is a yoga instructor),  body scans can be very helpful for individuals with insomnia because the scan reminds every muscle in your body that is is safe and alright to completely relax.  During a body scan, individuals start at one end of their body, usually their feet, and work their way up to their head and if there is any muscle tension you are to focus on that area before moving on. This type of meditation slowly calms the body down which should contribute to helping one fall asleep. During my body scan I would tense the muscle I was focussing on and than release it because this gave me something to do and distracted me from the fact I was lying still doing nothing. Although I had something to focus on, I didn’t like this meditative practise I was unsure of how to go about tensing my muscles and what it should feel like so unfortunately I didn’t seek any of the benefits. Next week I will engage in straight up mindfulness meditation. This one will be tricky I know but I am excited to try.
