I will be swaying away from yoga this week to talk to you about the current diet I have been on since November 8th. In a nut shell my gut has been bad for over 3 years and despite many visits to the doctor, naturopath, and gastroenterologist, it hasn’t been able to heal. I was diagnosed with SIBO in the summer, which stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. SIBO is an accumulation of bacteria in the small intestine.  The overgrowth is of bacteria that normally live in the gastrointestinal tract but have abnormally overgrown in a location not meant for so many bacteria. he primary reason why people end up with SIBO is because of a dysfunctional migrating motor complex (MMC).  The MMC creates high intensity and high frequency smooth muscle contractions of the intestines to push waste from the small intestines into the large intestine. The primary cause of a dysfunctional MMC is an autoimmune cross-reaction that occurs after a case of food poisoning or traveler’s diarrhea. Other compounding factors that can lead to SIBO are low stomach acid, bile insufficiency, intestinal strictures, opiate medication use, and MMC changes due to Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitisIf you want more information as well as the symptoms please check here http://www.sibodoctors.ca/sibobasics

If you do this diet for 2 weeks there is an 80% success rate and at 3 weeks there is 85% success rate. I was going to start this diet after the school term finished incase I got really bad die off symptoms but I am really good at pushing through and with my insomnia I usually feel pretty foggy in the brain and dizzy and as I have soo much motivation I JUST WANTED TO GET STARTED! I chose to start over reading break so my body could adjust to it. Since I exercise 6 times a week I have had to cut this down to only when I teach fitness class. I could write an essay on this diet but overall, it’s not the not eating that has been challenging but rather the getting the shake down. The shake tastes so gross and I am at point where i can’t even drink and when I do it goes right through me. I talked to my naturopath guy and he only wants me to stay on the diet for 14 day so woo I get to eat on Friday:)

You can choose a high carb/low fat version or a high fat/low card option. I am on the high fat/low carb option.

Check out the diet:

3 x a day

2TBSP amino acid shake (PROTEIN)

2 TBSP oil (I am doing coconut) (FAT)

3 TBSP honey (CARBS)

2 multivitamins

* Since I can’t get the amino acids down I am only eating coconut oil and honey. RIVETING I KNOW!

Don’t get me wrong I have defiantly been hungry but I will do anything to heal this gut of mine.

The protein powder that you mix with water that is GROSS!

You can add everything to the shake but I take it all separately. Shots of oil anyone…….

I am on day 10 and have only 4 days left.

*One exciting thing that has happened was that for the first time in over a long time, I slept 5 hours straight!!! So maybe with the healing of my gut, sleep will follow after. Wish me luck!

Let me know if anyone has any questions:)
