Jesse Miller presented today and talked about teachers and social media as well as kids and social media. Here are my take aways:

  • People do things on the internet but they don’t know why (ex. ALS challenge)
  • 2020- time to focus on network citizenship (ex. uvic email)
  • Digital identity– can have a lot of directions- here is one version of me and here is another (Ex. facebook, instagram, twitter)
  • Employees shouldn’t be filming or using any camera footage of others to than use for their own purpose (ex. girl falling on treadmill that’s now online)
  • Check out https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/
  • If you get a screen shot to send you and the sender doesn’t have the disclosure sign on it, technically you can do what you want with it
  • Maintaining professionalism- you don’t have to add all your co-workers (they could look on your insta and find out that you weren’t actually sick but were in Mexico)
  • Social media is gender biased (ex. Pinterest for females)
  • The kids who’s use technology seem to be all right (yes anxiety rooted in media issues but overall not a crazy impact)
  • HEADLINES- designed to get kids to click
  • Video games don’t cause violence
  • Kids aren’t addicted to technology but rather what it delivers, it’s comfort, if you can rationalize you shouldn’t be on your phone
  • ICBC have full warrant to check how injured you are
  • #teacher life, #teacher problems, #teacherfired social media
  • As teachers you have to be very careful what you are looking at on media while in the schools as IT people can look to see what you have done and it can come back at you
  • It has to be serious for a teacher to get fired
  • Understand the expectations and policies of the employer and ask what you’re allowed to
  • Sometimes you don’t have control (Ex. someone posts a photo of you on facebook)

Social media use by educators has 3 potential critical audiences:

  • Public/ parents: understand how school district wishes to use social media to communicate to the public.
  • Staff: understand how the employer wishes to use social media to communicate to and educate students.
  • Students: understand how the school wishes to use media to educate students.

Use of mobile technology by educators:

  • Don’t share student info/image on personal media accounts
  • Balance professional expectations
  • Understand consequences in the on line sharing of personal info about students
  • Assess Ethos of care in social sharing
  • Challenge co-workers to open Dialogues
  • Assess Frustrations and Opportunities for success
  • Get permission to share valuable information

-Kids get scholar ships for video gaming and gaming can be a positive outlet

-balance of one persons success vs. the other (ex. NHL player v.s a gamer)

  • Gaming esports is another industry that has evolved
